In darkness, God's truth shines most clear.

Some books are worth reading because they're beautiful. Some because they're entertaining. And some deserve a permanent place on the shelf because they remind us what faith can look like when believing becomes costly.

The Hiding Place is Corrie ten Boom's extraordinary true story of faith, courage, suffering, forgiveness, and hope during World War II.

Corrie was the first licensed female watchmaker in the Netherlands. When Nazi persecution threatened the lives of Jewish people around them, Corrie and her family became part of the Dutch Resistance, risking their own lives to hide and help Jews and underground workers escape.

In 1944, the ten Boom family was betrayed and arrested. Corrie eventually found herself imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. She alone among her immediate family survived.

What emerged from those terrible years was not simply a story of survival, but a remarkable testimony of Christian faith: of trusting God in suffering, choosing forgiveness in the face of unimaginable cruelty, and discovering that even the darkest places are not beyond the reach of His love.

The Hiding Place has carried that testimony to generations of readers.

Why We Chose It

Because there are books about faith.

And then there are books that show you what faith looks like when everything else has been taken away.

Corrie ten Boom's story belongs in the second category.

We chose The Hiding Place because it isn't a collection of easy answers for an easy life. It's the testimony of people who attempted to live what they believed when doing so put their safety—and ultimately their lives—at risk.

It's a story of courage. Sacrifice. Evil confronted. Extraordinary forgiveness.

And above all, the faithfulness of God in places where hope should have been impossible.

This is one of the books we believe is worth keeping on the shelf, returning to, and passing along.

How We'd Read It

Slowly.

This is the kind of book we'd leave beside a favorite chair and come back to over several evenings—the sort that occasionally makes you close the cover for a minute and sit with what you've just read.

And yes, it happens to be part of our For the First Cold Night collection.

Not because this is a “cozy read.”

It isn't.

But because a quiet house, a warm lamp, and an evening with nowhere else to be can make room for the kind of book that deserves your full attention.
